Ministry among Heat, Sweat and Sno-cones

IMAG0289Children with their wet hair dripping and swimming towels tossed around their neck received a special treat as they walked out of The Donner Center where many go each day to swim.

“Free sno-cones! Would you like a free sno-cone?”

Excited and chattering they lined up to receive their overflowing cup of ice and flavoring which produced happy faces and lips of red and blue.

“I can’t stop smiling,” comments Pastor Aaron Lentz of Athens Church in Columbus, Indiana. “This is great.”

Our church’s mission team had set up a sno-cone stand so that Pastor Aaron would have opportunity to share with others about their new church plant in the heart of downtown Columbus. While the kids waited to get their sno-cones, he spoke with their parents about the church, handed them an address card and invited them to come and visit.

Pastor Aaron continued to smile throughout the afternoon. He was overwhelmed by what a sno-cone stand could accomplish.

“Why are you doing this?” one young boy asked me as he heartily crunched the ice of his second one.

“Because we just wanted to bless some people on this hot day,” I replied.

“Wow. That’s nice,” he said.

Our mission team also put together a community cook-out for another church plant, Redeemed Community Church in Fairland, Indiana. Hot dogs, hamburgers, chips, popcorn and of course sno-cones were provided for those who came out for the evening. Pastor Bryan Sullivan and his wife Vanessa mingled with the different area folks that came also encouraging them to come visit their church.

Are the heat, sweat and sticky fingers from sno-cone after sno-cone worth it?

Yes, it is. It is a beautiful thing when an established church can come alongside a new church plant to help them in engaging the community for the gospel. It is encouraging to the pastor and their church body to continue to press on knowing they have the prayers and support of other churches.

The slogan of Athens Church is:

A people, a city and a world awakened to God and His glory.

Only God can use sno-cones on a hot summer day for this purpose.

  1. What a blessing y’all were to two churches and two communities!
