Returning to Where the Journey Began…Ngala

“They remember you. This is your village.” Joseph said to us. Tears welled up in my eyes as we pulled from the church at Ngala. We had been struggling this past month as to how we fit in with the Mission, and those words brought to memory how God used our first visit there to give us a heart for the people of Mozambique. While no one can claim a village, the people of Ngala always have a special place in our hearts.

We traveled across the river to Ngala with Gabriel to take the orphan food. We also took home Albertina and Betty who had come for the conference. The Ngala church currently has no male leadership. These two ladies lead the Sunday morning services. As soon as we pulled up to the church, I noticed the roof was in need of repair. I was ready to put the men who came along right to work in replacing the reeds, but it takes a little more than what I thought. We plan on some of the men from Xicumbane to come over and make the repairs.

We unloaded the orphan food and as I went to take pictures of the roof a group of children were soon following behind me. Nehemiah, one of our translators who was with us this year at Ngala, loves the village as much as we do and especially the children. It wasn’t long before he had the children singing. Unfortunately we had to return to Xicumbane and couldn’t stay with them long.

The last day of the conference we took not only Albertina and Betty back to their village, but also Pastor Americo and his wife who live about 10 miles from Ngala. This was a blessing to Doug as Pastor Americo has always been special to him. On the drive back, I noticed a woman walking with two girls: “It’s Noumsa!” I shouted, “Stop!” I jumped out of the bakkie and raced to her. She helps Albertina in feeding the orphans. We were very happy to see each other!

We praise God for taking us back to where His calling on our lives began and reminding us of what we are indeed here for…
Sing to the Lord, bless His name;
Proclaim good tidings of His salvation from day to day.
Tell of His glory among the nations,
His wonderful deeds among all the peoples.
-Psalm 96: 2, 3
